Maine Township Food Pantry Alert

The Food Pantry has issued an alert, calling for donations to help community children during the summer months, when they do not have access to the school food programs. Items always needed are peanut butter and jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, and spaghetti sauce.

Messiah Lutheran Church is a designated drop off point for the Maine Township Food Pantry. You don't have to be a member of the church, just bring non-perishable food items to Messiah during office hours (9-5 M-F) or during worship on Saturdays and Sundays.

The children of our Child Care Center bring canned foods each and every week to Chapel on Fridays, and place their gifts on our altar.  All food collected goes to the pantry every week to two weeks.  Also, our Child Care Center's "Lenten Pennies" program raised over $1000.00 to benefit the needy in Maine Township this spring.

ABOUT the FOOD PANTRY
The Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry provides food on an emergency basis to persons living in the greater Maine Township area. To receive assistance you must reside within Maine Township.

The first Maine Township Food Pantry program began in 1981, when the Township gave out fifteen food baskets during the Christmas season. By 1984, the emergency food pantry had established itself as a regular but relatively minor program under the auspices of the General Assistance department providing twenty-five baskets of food per month and maintaining its food supply in a single closet. In 1989, the program expanded to a large storage room in the basement of the Township Hall. Today, the Emergency Food Pantry supplies to 150 boxes of food every month, which go towards feeding over 300 individuals. Each box is hand-packed by township staff with dozens of nonperishable food items to help supplement the needs of township residents in distress.

The food is donated by individuals, businesses and local organizations such as churches, schools, and Scout programs who hold food drives to keep the food pantry stocked throughout the year. The Park Ridge Human Needs Task Force has been a regular contributor to the Food Pantry for many years. Monetary or food donations may be dropped off or mailed to the General Assistance Office in the Maine Township Hall, 1700 Ballard Rd., Park Ridge, or call 847-318-5200 for more information.
